27 Things learned through the Sacramento Public Library

The activity of the 27 things was a challenge for me.. Finding the time to sit a play with my new skills learned was difficult. I liked the fact that I did learn a whole bunch of stuff that I didn't know about. Blogging is fun but time consuming.

I didn't like that we had to sign up for about 13 different sites and to remember all of the user names and passwords is tough. One site would let u use one user name and the other wouldn't. So I now have a list of user names and password for each site that I signed up for and I may not use them again.

Over all I had fun doing everything on the list.

Thingfo is not for me... It took me a hour to get signed in and then when I went to set up the page I had trouble... I really like the easiness of myspace. U just have to click and drag.. I might try it again another day but not today... Good luck to those who do make it work...

Item # 25 Twitter

I signed up for twitter and am not a fan. I clicked on things I thought I would be interested in reading the twitter on. Well I just got a bunch of junk. A few twitters want me to join their twitter and they twitter every 20 seconds. This is just not what I want to spend time on.

Item # 24

Item number 24 of the 27 things is not for me. At this point in my life I'm NOT into learning a new language, but the lesson that I did look at seemed interesting and easy to learn from.

Item # 23

The SPL home page is exciting and new, but the one thing I don't like is that you have to know what your looking for when I get to the site... With the old site the were articles and list links that would take you to where you need to go. It's different and I like it.

Item # 22

audio books is a easy one... I've downloaded a few books and I'm excited for the ipod download. I haven't found a book that's available yet, but maybe this weekend..

Item 21 Podcast

The podcast is truely exciting.. I an podcast uploader for my iphone. Using Itunes is what I use so I'm not going to sign up for the bbc at this time.

Item 17 and 19

Item 17 I signed up for and left a message in the sandbox, but I really haven't been back since.. as for Item 19 the list of the award winning web 2.0.? I signed up for the whiteboard, but unless you have someone to share with it is pointless. I did look through the list and found that some of the sights are available for the Iphone, and I'm really into my Iphone.. The following sites are app's for the Iphone...
Hair mixer... Where you can upload a picture of yourself and change the hair style.
Urbanspoon... A great app. when you want to find an place to eat.
Whiteboard... Sharing information the you have typed and another person can add to it and change it.
Craigsmoblelist.. It's craigs list what more can I say.

This is what the world is coming to when you don't have to have Microsoft word to type a paper.  Way cool.

 

Item 16

OK the Wiki is very cool. There are times that I do use wikipedia to look things up, even though I know that some of the things may be made up. As I read on to find out more I found that this is one more thing that I have to sign up for then I found the sandbox. I signed up and began to edited what was already there. What fun. It's like an on going play place.

Item # 15 Library 2.0

"Library 2.0 is a new way of providing library service through new Internet technologies." Quote, unquote, but the service of the 2.0 is not for the inexperienced Internet surfer. I'm afraid that in todays world people want things fast and I found that there is a lot of reading in the 2.0 and it still doesn't tell me how it helps. It says that library 2.0 is, "helping users find information, gather knowledge and create content." What happened to checking out a book and just reading it?
With Internet techologies ever changing how can we keep up? I just got a new app. for my iphone and with that app. I was able to put in my library card number and with the help of the librarian we were able to scan the bar code on the phone and bring up my record to allow me to check out a book. All the information in one place.

Item 13 and 14

Bookmarking I think I will leave up the internet explorer. I just use the favorites to keep the sites I like.
Tagging blogs and links to other blogs are so confusing. With Technorati you can tag words that will link you to blog posts.

Item # 7 Tech Stuff

Item # 7 Technology Stuff is what I live for.
I work in the computer lab at my school and I just received a new lab. The lab is made up of little workstations which are called "Bricks". All the information is set up on the server and made available to the students. All they have to do is log in with their user name and password. It opens their individual folders so they are able to save in one spot and the teacher can retrieve the students work with out having to search through the different computers. The teachers can create homework and save it into the teacher folder and the student can (once logged in) open it and start working on it. The lab is equiped with a smart board and an over head projector. It's so cool.

American Idol

I am really liking this years American Idol. It is getting harder to see who is going to win. I have three favorites. Allison, Danny and Adam. They are the best.

Starting my goals

This is my first blog. I'm 40 something and have been working at the library for eleven years this May. I also work at Isleton school teaching the little ones about computers. I have four great kids, three dogs and two cats.
